What services can you expect from Belgian consular officers?

  • Issuing a temporary passport in case of loss or theft of your travel documents.
  • Giving advice on transferring money from Belgium in case you are in need of money.
  • Approach your family or friends in Belgium via the FPS Foreign Affairs in Brussels to make money or plane tickets available.
  • Through the FPS Foreign Affairs in Brussels, ensure that your family or friends are informed in the event of an accident, hospitalization or death abroad, and advise on the procedures to follow.
  • Contacting and visiting Belgians who have been arrested/detained and, if necessary, arrange for the transmission of messages to their family/friends in Belgium.
     

What services are Belgian consular officers NOT allowed to provide?

  • Acting in private matters such as booking a hotel, paying hotel bills, storing luggage, looking for a home, paying medical costs, customs fees, fines, court costs, sureties, forcibly retrieving a kidnapped child or housing a minor, enforcing a Belgian civil order abroad or requiring a third country to settle a family dispute, investigating a crime or death,  and so on; 
  • Provide preferential treatment in a hospital, with a doctor, in prison, for excursions or visits, or mediate to get someone out of prison or in court proceedings; 
  • Provide a job, a work or residence permit or the extension of a visa.
